Guest Lecture by Prof. Axel Killian from Germany on Liquid Crystal
Guest Lecture,
Yogyakarta, 24 November 2025 — The Physics Department of UIN Sunan Kalijaga held a special Guest Lecture featuring Prof. Axel Killian from the Senior Experten Service (SES), Germany. The lecture was delivered as part of theQuantum Physics II course, guided by Asih Melati, M.Sc., Ph.D, and carried the title “Introduction to Liquid Crystals and Their Connection to Quantum Mechanics.” The session took place during regular class hours, from08:00 to 09:30 WIB.
During the lecture, Prof. Killian introduced the fundamental concepts behind liquid crystals, including the origins and historical development of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), as well as the essential physical principles that enable their operation. He also highlighted how quantum mechanical concepts underpin the behavior and applications of liquid crystal materials.
Physics students participated enthusiastically throughout the session, actively engaging in discussions and asking questions in both English and Indonesian. Their participation reflected strong interest in understanding the interplay between advanced materials and quantum mechanics, as well as the real-world applications of these technologies.
The event provided valuable international exposure for students and enhanced the academic atmosphere of the Physics program, strengthening opportunities for future collaborations and global learning experiences.
